Obsidian Still Months Away from Magic RPG Launch, Continues Development
Obsidian Entertainment Responds to Criticism Surrounding Avowed RPG, Confirms Ongoing Development Efforts
Obsidian Entertainment has addressed criticism surrounding its highly anticipated fantasy RPG, Avowed, emphasizing that there is still work to be done before players can experience the game firsthand.
This update on one of Xbox Game Studios’ most anticipated titles comes from the Dropped Frames podcast, where Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the ongoing development process. Patel highlighted the challenge of working on Avowed while gradually unveiling content to the public. However, she stressed that the demos shown to fans represent earlier builds of the game.
Avowed has made limited appearances at events, with a recent example being a gameplay-focused demo showcased at the Xbox Developer Direct in January.
“We’re getting to show more and more, but all of that is while the game is still in progress, obviously,” Patel explained. She acknowledged fans’ feedback, particularly regarding the combat mechanics, stating that the team is actively addressing these concerns.
Patel expressed appreciation for such feedback, indicating that Obsidian has already addressed or is working on addressing the highlighted issues. When discussing how the studio incorporates online commentary, she mentioned that it’s a significant point of discussion internally.
“We’ve definitely got enough people who follow that stuff closely enough that, if there’s something that’s coming up a lot in commentary, we’re probably talking about it internally,” Patel said.
Recent updates have shed light on how Avowed will differ from Obsidian’s previous titles. While the game will feature multiple endings, players won’t have the option to romance companions. Additionally, they can only play as either a human or an elf character.
Avowed is scheduled to launch for PC and Xbox Series X | S in fall. In other Microsoft gaming news, Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed plans to discuss the company’s future in interactive entertainment in an upcoming business update. This follows reports of the company’s interest in expanding its titles to other platforms.
